Cosmetic Restauration
The 930 Turbo is one of the most recognizable of all the Porsche models. The 930 was a true “Supercar” when it was sold new in 1979. The 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo had a base price around $44,200 – by the time a few options were selected the sticker price was normally around $60,000 – which equates to $192,000 in 2013. The 930 Turbo for the USA was delivered with a 3.3 liter ( 201 cubic inch) engine, producing 265 HP at around 9 pounds of boost. Different top speeds were listed , anywhere from 156-162 mph, and 0-60 mph was stated at 5.0 seconds. People spoke of “turbo-lag” which is the time it takes for the turbo to spool up and deliver full power, the dreaded “over-steer” where the rear end comes around, and a “whale-tail” which describes the big wing that gives this street car its signature look. The 930 Turbo is a real Porsche that every lover of the marque can appreciate for bringing the first production based turbo-charged car to the public.
This car was recently bought by a young man from Brazil and he intends to drive the car and enjoy it. The engine was just rebuilt by Porsche Uber-Guru Kevin Jeannette at Gunnar Racing, I can’t remember Kevin ever building an engine for a car that he was not restoring. So in a very strange twist the crew at Orbit will actually be performing a cosmetic restoration - the twist is that normally Orbit would build the engine and let a bodyshop make the car look nice. Any restoration type work is difficult for both the customer and the reputable shop, it just takes more time to do it “right” than anybody could possibly imagine. The goal for this project is to maintain as much originality as possible, clean and restore as much as possible, only replacing parts when necessary.
